My Bird of Paradise blooms fail to open completely, any idea why?

Yes, do not water after buds are formed. The plant then thinks it's dying and produces its flowers, the reason for its existance, to propogate itself. My Bird of Paradise blooms fail to open completely, any idea why?
This is as fully open as they get: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im鈥?/a>My Bird of Paradise blooms fail to open completely, any idea why?
Strelitzia like to be starved of water in flower,as this is its seed pod if you like. The plant tries that much harder under stress, and produces finer blooms. The temptation to feed and water them too much is great at this time but should be avoided
first of all are you sure it is only half opened because the blooms may only look half open and be fully open.

if it really isnt fullly open maybe water is the problem

if not add lots of plant food and give it warmth
