My butterfly bush is big, beautiful and has had lots of blooms but is top heavy. Will it hurt to cut it back?

Most of the foliage is in the top half, with not much foliage halfway down. It is falling over and I don't want to lose it but I don't know how much to prune back. Can anyone help? My butterfly bush is big, beautiful and has had lots of blooms but is top heavy. Will it hurt to cut it back?
wait for it to go dormant for the winter, then prune it back short. next spring it will come back with a vengeance, as the summer progresses, prune back as needed and blooms die, feed it well and it will go nutsMy butterfly bush is big, beautiful and has had lots of blooms but is top heavy. No, in fact it's good to prune them. It will encourage it to bush out on the bottom. You can prune fairly aggressively but remember that, depending on where you live, it may be coming to the end of the growing season and it won't have alot of time to recover. That's okay though as it will come back next season.
